Question: Ponyboy says that “Dally didn’t die a hero. Dally dies violent and young a desperate, but Johnny was proper he died gallant.” What does Ponyboy mean by this? Discuss this statement with accurate reference to the novel.

Essay:
The novel ‘The Outsiders’, written by S.E Hinton is about teenagers growing up in the early 1960’s. This book is based on the ongoing conflicts in between the Social Class or Socs and the Greasers. 1 of the main characters in this book is Dallas Winston, also known as Dally. Dally is a 17 year old boy who is from the streets of New York.

Dally is a very complicated character, even though he appears harmful he also shows that he is compassionate. He is considered the “tough guy” of the group and is stated to be “The shade of distinction that separates Greasers from Hoods” (page 13). All through the book he shows compassion towards Johnny. Johnny is one of the gang members who has grown up in a dysfunctional family members, with abusive household members. Even although Dally is the opposite of Johnny he seems to have a soft spot for the boy and often looks out for him. Although he could appear difficult on the outside he has a kinder side hidden deep inside himself. Dally also chooses to hide his emotions as he believed that it was crucial to be difficult and mean so that you would in no way get hurt.

Dallas Winston is regarded one of the most harmful members of the Greaser’s gang. Ponyboy says that “Dally didn’t die a hero, he died violent and young and desperate” (page 187). This statement produced by Ponyboy is true as Dally had always been “tougher, colder and meaner” than the rest of the greasers gang. He also loves to defy the law and had a significant police record.
Even though Dally was cruel and aggressive he was brave. After Johnny had killed Bob to save Ponyboy’s life, Ponyboy and Johnny had gone straight to Dally for assist. Dally had given them a way out of the mess that had been caused. This was income, a gun for protection and a spot to remain. Dally did this without having any regret even even though it could mean he could be put in jail.

Yet another time he saves Johnny and Ponyboy following they ran into a burning church to save the kids stuck inside. Even though Ponyboy had climbed out of the church by himself Dally hits him and stops the fire on his back burning through to his skin. Dallas then goes back inside the church and pulls Johnny out, as he had fallen unconscious immediately after a piece of timber collapsed on him. Ponyboy said “but Johnny was appropriate he did die gallant” (page 187). This statement is correct as beneath Dally’s rugged exterior there was another side to his personality.

There are constantly going to be great and bad things inside a person. If emotions are by no means shown then they get bottled up inside till 1 day you explode. Dallas Winston is an example for all teens that becoming “the tough guy” is not often the best notion.

Enjoy the book & movie.Not certain what you are asking.Johnny died gallant result in he did trying to save some youngsters from burning to death.Dallas kinda died by cop suicide,(pointing an unloaded gun at police) immediately after robbing a shop.I believe Ponyboy may have been talking about the newspaper articles on each of their deaths and the way society viewed them.
